Overview
This Siwa Oasis Tour 4-day, 3-night takes travelers from Cairo to one of Egypt’s most remote destinations — Siwa Oasis, roughly 750 km away with no airport or train, reached only by an overnight road transfer (8–10 hours by private car, 10–12 by bus) through Alexandria and Marsa Matruh. Once in Siwa, the trip settles into a mix of relaxation and adventure: floating in the hyper-saline salt lakes, soaking in natural hot springs, and watching sunsets over the oasis, balanced against a full day of 4×4 desert safari in the Great Sand Sea, complete with dune bashing, sandboarding, marine fossil hunting, and a Bedouin dinner under some of Egypt’s darkest skies.
The cultural side of the trip is just as central. Travelers visit the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, which Alexander the Great famously consulted in 331 BC, along with Cleopatra Spring, the centuries-old Shali Fortress built from mud and salt brick, and Siwa’s local markets known for silver, dates, and olive oil. The final morning closes gently with breakfast served on a palm-covered island in the lake, before the drive back to Cairo.
Best visited between October and April, this tour suits couples, photographers, small groups, and solo travelers alike, with flexible options for accommodation tier, an added desert camping night, or a stop at El Alamein along the coastal route.

Itinerary
Overnight: In transit
Route: Cairo → Alexandria → Marsa Matruh → Siwa
Your journey starts the evening before Day 1, so you roll into the oasis at breakfast time rather than sunset. By private car this is roughly 8–10 hours with stops; by public bus, closer to 10–12. Expect several routine security checkpoints along the way — keep your passport in your daypack, not the boot. If you'd rather break the drive, we can add a daytime stop at El Alamein's war cemeteries and museum on the coastal route.
Travel Note: There are no flights to Siwa. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something else.
Overnight: Siwa
Main Visits: Salt lakes, natural hot springs, sunset viewpoint
You'll arrive in the morning, check into your hotel or lodge, and get a proper breakfast and a few hours of horizontal recovery — the drive earns it. In the afternoon we head to the salt lakes, which are old quarry pools so dense with salt that floating isn't a skill, it's a physical inevitability. Then a soak in one of the natural hot springs, and a sunset stop somewhere quiet.
Travel Note: Don't shave the day before. Salt water and fresh nicks are a memorable combination, in the wrong way. Rinse off in fresh water afterwards — we'll bring some.
Overnight: Siwa
Main Visits: Great Sand Sea, Siwa Protected Area, fossil sites, Bir Wahed area, dune sunset
This is the day people book the whole trip for. We take 4x4s out into the Great Sand Sea — one of the largest dune fields on the planet — with stops in the Siwa Protected Area, where the desert floor still holds marine fossils from when all of this sat under an ocean. There's sandboarding on the softer faces, dune bashing on the way through, and a long series of stops where the only sensible response is to stop talking and look. We time the return around a dune-top sunset, then a traditional Bedouin meal, tea brewed on the fire, and as much stargazing as you can stay awake for.
Travel Note: Dune bashing is bumpy by design. Tell us in advance about back or neck issues and we'll ask the driver to take the gentle line — it's a request they're used to.
Overnight: Siwa
Main Visits: Temple of the Oracle of Amun, Cleopatra Spring, Shali Fortress, local markets, Fatnas Island
Today is the cultural half of Siwa. We start at the Temple of the Oracle of Amun at Aghurmi — the same oracle Alexander the Great crossed the desert to consult in 331 BC, reportedly leaving with an answer he never repeated to anyone. From there it's Cleopatra Spring, a circular stone pool fed by clear water, and then a walk up through Shali Fortress, the 13th-century mud-and-salt-brick citadel that partly dissolved during three days of rain in 1926. You'll have free time in the markets for Siwi silver, dates, olive oil and baskets before we head to Fatnas Island for sunset over the lake.
Travel Note: Siwa is conservative, and its Amazigh (Berber) culture is genuinely living rather than performed. Shoulders and knees covered away from the springs, and ask before photographing people. It costs you nothing and it matters here.
Overnight: Cairo (or in transit)
Main Visits: Breakfast on a Siwa island
We keep the last morning slow. Breakfast is served on one of the small palm-covered islands in the lake — flatbread, local olives, dates, eggs, tea — which is a better final image of Siwa than a hotel buffet. Departure is around 10:30 am for the drive back to Cairo.
Travel Note: Be realistic about Day 4. It's mostly a travel day, and you'll reach Cairo in the evening. Don't book an international flight for the same night

Why Book This Tour With Nile Routes
Plenty of companies will sell you a 4 days Siwa Oasis tour from Cairo. Here’s what we think separates a good one from a long, expensive drive.
We build the trip around the transfer, not despite it. The road is the single biggest variable. We schedule the journey overnight so you don’t lose a daylight hour to the highway, and we brief you honestly on which option suits you — private car, or the public bus if budget matters more than legroom.
Three nights, not two. A lot of “Siwa trips” are really two nights with a lot of driving bolted on. Three nights is the minimum that lets you do the oasis sites and a full desert day without sprinting.
Licensed desert operation. The Great Sand Sea isn’t a place to improvise. Our safari runs with local Siwi drivers, permitted vehicles and cleared checkpoints. That isn’t a luxury; it’s the legal and sensible way to be out there.
We tell you what isn’t true. Cleopatra almost certainly never bathed in Cleopatra Spring. Alexander the Great almost certainly did visit the Oracle. We’d rather you hear both from us than find out on TripAdvisor.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in a typical 4-day Siwa Oasis tour from Cairo?
Return transfer from Cairo, three nights' accommodation, daily breakfast, a full-day 4x4 desert safari with sandboarding, a Bedouin meal in the desert, entrance fees to the listed sites and an English-speaking guide. Extra meals, drinks, tips and optional dinners sit outside the base package.
How long does it take to travel from Cairo to Siwa Oasis on a 4-day tour?
Around 8–10 hours by private car and 10–12 by public bus, covering roughly 750 km via Alexandria and Marsa Matruh. We run it overnight so you arrive in the morning with a full day ahead of you.
What are the best 4-day Siwa Oasis tour packages for families?
Private car transfer, a mid-range or eco-lodge hotel, and a softened safari — gentler dune driving, more shade stops, and an earlier return on desert night. We generally suggest children aged eight and up.
Is a 4-day Siwa Oasis tour suitable for solo travellers?
Very. Siwa is one of the easiest places in Egypt to travel alone, and the bus option keeps costs down. Solo travellers usually pay a small single supplement on accommodation — we'll show it clearly in your quote.
What is the average cost of a 4-day Siwa Oasis all-inclusive tour?
It depends on group size, season and accommodation tier, and ranges widely between budget bus-and-guesthouse trips and private 4x4 eco-lodge packages. We don't publish a fixed number because it would be wrong for most people — send your dates and traveller count for an accurate quote.
Which eco-lodges are best for a 4-day Siwa Oasis stay?
Siwa's eco-lodges are built from kershef — local salt-rock and mud brick — and the better ones run on solar or candlelight with no televisions. We match you to a property based on your budget and how rustic you want it, and confirm the exact name and availability before you pay anything.
Can I combine desert camping with hotel stays on a 4-day Siwa tour?
Yes, and it's a popular change. Keep nights one and three in a hotel or lodge, and swap night two for a camp in the Great Sand Sea. Just tell us at booking, as camping needs to be arranged with the desert operator in advance.
What attractions are covered in a standard 4-day Siwa Oasis itinerary?
The salt lakes, natural hot springs, the Great Sand Sea with sandboarding, the Siwa Protected Area and its fossil sites, the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, Cleopatra Spring, Shali Fortress, the local markets and Fatnas Island. The Mountain of the Dead is a common add-on.
What is the best time of year to book a 4-day Siwa Oasis tour?
October through April. Days are comfortable and desert nights are cold but pleasant. June to August is workable if you accept early starts and late-afternoon activity, and it's cheaper.
What should I pack for a 4-day Siwa Oasis desert tour?
Layers, a warm jacket for the nights, closed shoes, sun protection, swimwear, a headlamp, cash, your passport and a power bank. See the packing table above for the full list.
