We collect you from your Cairo hotel and return you to the same door at the end of the day. Everything in between takes place inside the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area, designated as such in 1989. Your first destination is Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, roughly ninety kilometres beyond Fayoum, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in recognition of the forty-million-year-old whale skeletons preserved there. Itinerary
A Nileroutes representative meets you at your Cairo hotel and the day begins with the drive southwest, about ninety-five kilometres to Fayoum. Every visit on this itinerary falls within Wadi El Rayan, protected land since 1989, so the transition from city to desert is also a transition into a managed conservation area.
We head first to the furthest point, roughly ninety kilometres beyond Fayoum. Wadi El Hitan sits inside the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area and earned its UNESCO World Heritage listing for the fossilised remains of whales dating back some forty million years. Your Egyptologist walks the site with you and explains what you are looking at, which matters here more than at most Egyptian sites, because the story is written in bones rather than in stone reliefs.
On the way back toward the waterfalls we stop at Mudawara Mountain. Then it is on to Wadi El Rayan itself: two lakes in a natural depression of the Western Desert, connected by Egypt's only waterfalls, which came into being in 1970 when drainage water from Fayoum's farmland overflowed into the basin. Entrance fees to the sites in the programme are included.
Lunch is served late, at a good-quality local restaurant in Fayoum, after the driving is behind you. Afterwards we transfer you back to your Cairo hotel.
Local insight: This is a desert day with two long transfer legs, and the vehicle is where a fair share of it is spent. Bottled water is provided on board throughout, but sun protection and shoes you are happy to get sandy are on you.
