Overview

There is a version of Egypt that has nothing to do with temples and tomb queues, and it sits ninety-five kilometres southwest of your Cairo hotel. This is the one-day Fayoum tour from Cairo we run at Nileroutes: a private, guided, entirely 4×4 journey into a protected desert landscape where the headline attraction is not a pharaoh but a whale.

We collect you from your Cairo hotel and return you to the same door at the end of the day. Everything in between takes place inside the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area, designated as such in 1989. Your first destination is Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, roughly ninety kilometres beyond Fayoum, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in recognition of the forty-million-year-old whale skeletons preserved there. From there you cross to Mudawara Mountain, then continue to the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls, where two lakes in a natural depression of the Western Desert are joined by Egypt’s only waterfalls, formed in 1970 by drainage water overflowing from Fayoum’s farmland.

Lunch is served late, at a local restaurant in Fayoum, once the driving is done. Then we bring you back to Cairo

This suits travellers who have already given Giza its day and want something with air in it. It is a genuine desert itinerary with real distances involved, so expect a long day in the vehicle between stops rather than a gentle pottering tour.

Itinerary

A Nileroutes representative meets you at your Cairo hotel and the day begins with the drive southwest, about ninety-five kilometres to Fayoum. Every visit on this itinerary falls within Wadi El Rayan, protected land since 1989, so the transition from city to desert is also a transition into a managed conservation area.

Why Book This Tour With Nile Routes

  • It is private, not a shared coach. The vehicle, the guide and the day’s rhythm are yours. You stop when the light is good, and you are not waiting on strangers at every viewpoint.
  • Every transfer is by 4×4. Wadi El Hitan and the tracks around Wadi El Rayan are not paved-saloon-car country. We do not swap vehicles halfway or ask you to pay extra for the desert leg. The 4×4 covers the whole day, hotel to hotel.
  • You travel with an English-speaking Egyptologist. Whale fossils in a sand basin need explaining, and a licensed guide is what turns a scenic drive into something you can actually recount at home.
  • The price is all-in and the admissions are covered. Entrance fees to the sites named in the programme, bottled water in the vehicle, lunch, and all taxes and service charges are already in the figure quoted. Aside from tips and anything you choose to add yourself, you are not paying at the gate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Fayoum from Cairo on this tour?

Fayoum is about ninety-five kilometres from Cairo. Wadi El Hitan sits a further ninety kilometres or so beyond Fayoum, deep inside the protected area, which is why the itinerary is built around a 4x4 and why the day is a long one. We pick you up at your Cairo hotel and return you there.

Do I need a 4x4 for this Fayoum trip?

Yes, and it is included. All transfers on this tour are by 4x4 vehicle, from your hotel door to the desert sites and back again. There is no vehicle change and no separate desert supplement to pay on the day.

Is Wadi El Hitan really a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

It is. Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, lies within the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area and was recognised by UNESCO for the fossilised whale skeletons found there, dated to around forty million years old.

Are the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls natural?

They are Egypt's only waterfalls, and they exist because of a 1970 overflow of drainage water from Fayoum's farmland into a natural desert depression. Two lakes now sit connected by the falls, inside land that has been a protected area since 1989.

Is lunch included, and when is it served?

Yes. A late lunch is served at a good-quality local restaurant in El Fayoum, after the sightseeing rather than in the middle of it. Bottled water is provided in the vehicle throughout the day. If you have dietary requirements, mention them on the enquiry form so we can confirm arrangements in advance.

Is this a private tour or a shared group?

It is a private tour and runs every day. The price per person drops as the party size increases, from $370 for a solo traveller to $154 each for a group of six, because the vehicle and the Egyptologist are dedicated to your party regardless of how many of you there are.

What is not covered by the price?

Tipping and anything not listed in the programme. Entrance fees to the sites named, the guide, the 4x4, water, lunch and all taxes and service charges are already included in the quoted rate.
