Overview

Egypt has a way of funnelling first-time visitors into the same three postcards. This one doesn’t. Ninety minutes past the last Cairo flyover, the traffic thins, the tarmac gives way to sand, and you spend eight hours in a landscape most travellers never see: freshwater lakes older than the pyramids, waterfalls in the middle of the Western Desert, and a UNESCO site built entirely from the bones of prehistoric whales.

Our private Fayoum tour from Cairo collects you from your hotel in Cairo, Giza, Al Haram, Al Giza, Kafr Nassar or 6th of October City and runs roughly two hours out to the oasis in a private air-conditioned vehicle. On arrival you switch to a 4×4 — the only sensible way to reach the desert stops — and the day opens up: the hilltop pottery village of Tunis, the shoreline of Lake Qarun, the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan, and Wadi Al-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, about 90 km deeper into the desert. Between them sit a jeep safari across the dunes, sandboarding for anyone who fancies it, and the mirror-flat Magic Lake.

Entry fees, lunch and bottled water are included, so once you’re in the car the day is essentially handled. It suits couples, families and photographers who’ve already done Giza and want the other Egypt — and it’s an honest full day: two hours out, two hours back, and a lot packed in between.

Itinerary

Your driver meets you at your chosen pickup point in Cairo or Giza and heads southwest by private air-conditioned vehicle — around two hours on the road. Once you reach Fayoum you transfer into a 4x4, which handles everything from here.

First stop is Tunis Village, perched above the lake and known for its pottery studios and quiet, unhurried atmosphere. From there you continue to Lake Qarun, one of the oldest natural lakes anywhere on earth, where the shoreline runs straight into desert.

Local insight: the light over Lake Qarun is flattest at midday — the panoramic viewpoints above Tunis Village photograph far better earlier in the morning, before the haze builds.

Why Book This Tour With Nile Routes

A genuinely private day, not a shared coach. Transport is private throughout — your own air-conditioned vehicle from Cairo and a 4×4 for the desert sections. That means the pace bends to you rather than to twenty strangers on a bus schedule.

No ticket queues to manage and no cash to count out. Entry fees, the jeep safari, lunch and bottled water are all included in what you pay, so you’re not being nudged toward extras at every stop.

Doorstep pickup across six areas of greater Cairo. We collect from Cairo, Giza, Al Giza, Al Haram, Kafr Nassar and 6th of October City, and return you to the same area at the end of the day.

Flexibility if plans change. The tour carries free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund — useful when you’re building an Egypt itinerary from six time zones away.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is this private Fayoum tour from Cairo?

Eight hours door to door, including roughly two hours of driving in each direction. Starting times are confirmed when you book, so if you have a flight, a Nile cruise connection or a fixed hotel checkout on the same day, tell us on the enquiry form and we'll confirm what's workable.

Is transport really private, and what vehicle do we use?

Yes. All transfers are by private air-conditioned vehicle, and the tour uses private transportation throughout. Inside Fayoum you switch to a 4x4 jeep, which is what makes the desert sections — Wadi Al-Hitan, the dunes and Magic Lake — reachable.

What's included in the price?

Private air-conditioned transfers, private transportation, entry fees, the jeep safari, lunch and bottled water. Tips are not included and are left to your discretion.

Where can you pick us up?

From six areas: Cairo, Giza, Al Giza, Al Haram, Kafr Nassar and 6th of October City. Drop-off is at the same locations at the end of the day.

Which languages can the driver speak?

English, Arabic, Italian, German and Spanish. Confirm your preferred language on the enquiry form so we can arrange it in advance.

Is the tour suitable for families or travellers with limited mobility?

The tour is listed as wheelchair accessible, and the sites are outdoor and largely flat, though the desert sections involve 4x4 driving over uneven ground. If anyone in your party has a mobility or health requirement, tell us before you book rather than on the day.

What if our plans change?

Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.
