Itinerary
Your driver meets you at your chosen pickup point in Cairo or Giza and heads southwest by private air-conditioned vehicle — around two hours on the road. Once you reach Fayoum you transfer into a 4x4, which handles everything from here.
First stop is Tunis Village, perched above the lake and known for its pottery studios and quiet, unhurried atmosphere. From there you continue to Lake Qarun, one of the oldest natural lakes anywhere on earth, where the shoreline runs straight into desert.
Local insight: the light over Lake Qarun is flattest at midday — the panoramic viewpoints above Tunis Village photograph far better earlier in the morning, before the haze builds.
Next comes Wadi El Rayan, home to Egypt's largest waterfalls, where the two lakes spill into one another. It's a natural break in the day — photographs, a walk, a sit by the water.
You then drive deeper into the Western Desert to Wadi Al-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 90 km on. The fossils here are the remains of prehistoric marine mammals, preserved where a shallow sea once covered the Sahara. Lunch is included on the tour.
Local insight: Wadi Al-Hitan is an open-air site with almost no shade. Closed shoes, a hat and sunglasses will matter more than anything else you pack.
The desert safari section follows — 4x4 driving across the dunes, sandboarding for those who want it, and a stop at Magic Lake. Gazelles are occasionally spotted in this stretch, though nobody can promise them.
The drive back to Cairo takes roughly two hours, ending at your hotel.
Be realistic about pacing: four major sites, a safari and 200-odd kilometres of driving inside eight hours means some stops are brief. This is a day built for breadth, not for lingering.
