A Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor typically runs 4 days and 3 nights, sailing downstream and stopping at Philae Temple and the High Dam in Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, and finally Luxor’s Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, and the Valley of the Kings. The Nile Routes package includes airport transfers, all ground transport (car, horse carriage, and motorboat), all standard entrance fees, a private Egyptologist guide, full-board meals on board, and domestic flights from Cairo to Aswan and Luxor back to Cairo. Drinks, the three separately ticketed tombs (Tutankhamun, Ramses 5th–6th, Seti 1st), optional excursions, and gratuities are not included. Sailing dates are fixed by the vessel schedule, so departures should be confirmed at booking.
Aswan and Luxor sit about 130 miles apart, with Kom Ombo and Edfu strung out in between, and if you try to do that stretch by road you’ll spend four days checking in and out of hotels, repacking a suitcase every morning, and watching the good light disappear through a car window. That’s the version most first-timers accidentally book.
A Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor solves the problem the same way it’s been solved for about five thousand years. You unpack once. The boat moves while you eat lunch or sleep. Every temple you came for happens to be built on the riverbank, because the river was the highway — the ancient Egyptians didn’t put Kom Ombo there by accident.
At Nile Routes, this is the route we run most often, and we run it privately: your own guide, your own vehicle, your own pace inside the ship’s sailing schedule. This page lays out the full Aswan to Luxor cruise itinerary, what’s genuinely included, what isn’t, what changes the price, and when to go. No fine print buried at the bottom.
Itinerary
Main Visits: High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk, Philae Temple
You fly Cairo to Aswan in the early morning, and our guide will be waiting outside the terminal holding a sign bearing your name.start your day with the visit of the High Dam, and then take a short motorboat across to Philae Temple, which was cut into 40,000 pieces and moved to higher ground stone by stone when the dam raised the water. Your guide will tell you the whole rescue story on the boat over.
Overnight: Aswan (on board)
This is the day people are most surprised by an early tour to the great temples of Abu Simble of Ramese 2nd. Late afternoon you dock at Kom Ombo, a rare double temple split down the middle between Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the elder — and then the small museum next door with the mummified crocodiles, which children find either fascinating or deeply upsetting, with very little middle ground.
Travel Note: Kom Ombo sits right on the bank; the walk from the boat takes about two minutes. Easiest access of the whole trip.
Overnight: Edfu (on board)
Main Visits: Kom Ombo Temple, Crocodile Museum
Morning starts with a horse carriage clattering through Edfu town to the Temple of Horus — the best-preserved temple in Egypt, buried under sand for centuries, which is exactly why the ceilings are still black with soot from ancient lamps. Back on board, you sail through the Esna Lock toward Luxor, then head to Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple, ideally as the light drops and the columns go orange.
Travel Note: Karnak is enormous and mostly unshaded. Comfortable shoes matter more here than anywhere else on the route.
Overnight: Luxor (on board)
Main Visits: Edfu Temple of Horus, Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple
After breakfast and check-out, you cross to the Luxor West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, where your ticket covers three tombs of your guide's recommendation, then the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut and a stop at the Colossi of Memnon. We transfer you to Luxor Airport for the flight back to Cairo.
Travel Note: Start early. By 10am the valley is both hotter and busier, and the difference is genuinely significant.
Main Visits: Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor?
Most commonly 4 days and 3 nights. Five-day/four-night and longer versions exist, usually by adding extra nights in Aswan or Luxor rather than extra sailing.
What places does the cruise visit?
Philae Temple, the High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan; Kom Ombo; Edfu; and in Luxor, Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon. Exact stops vary by vessel and package.
Is Aswan to Luxor better than Luxor to Aswan?
Aswan to Luxor sails downstream and takes fewer nights, which suits shorter trips. Luxor to Aswan often gives more time in Luxor because the sites are spread across extra days. Choose by schedule, not by prestige.
Is Abu Simbel included?
No — not in the standard fare, ours or anyone's. It's offered as a pre-cruise excursion or package extension. Check that transport, tickets, and a guide are all covered before you book it anywhere.
What is the best time to take the cruise?
October through April, for comfortable temperatures. Summer departures cost less but involve serious daytime heat.
Are meals included?
Yes — our package is full board on the cruise. Drinks, including bottled water, alcohol, and any specialty dining or gala events, are extra.
Are entrance fees included?
Yes, all standard entrance fees for the sites in this itinerary. The exceptions are the separately ticketed tombs of Tutankhamun, Ramses V & VI, and Seti I. Always read this section carefully on any operator's page, because inclusions vary widely.
Do cruises include airport and hotel transfers?
Ours do — pickup and drop-off at both ends, plus all transport in between. This is not universal, so confirm it before booking elsewhere.
Is a Nile cruise suitable for families?
Yes, and it's one of the easiest ways to travel Egypt with children — one unpacking, meals sorted, no daily hotel changes. Confirm cabin configuration, child pricing, and excursion length with us in advance.
What's the difference between a cruise ship and a dahabiya?
A cruise ship is larger, with more facilities, dining, and entertainment. A dahabiya is a small sailing vessel — quieter, more intimate, more exclusive, and priced accordingly.
Are there cruises shorter than four days?
Yes — some operators sell overnight or three-day options. They compress the sightseeing, and in our experience they leave people feeling they saw Egypt through a window. Four days is the shortest we'd genuinely recommend.
