Overview

Two days around Luxor & Aswan is enough for the headline sites in either city, but not both cities properly in a single 48-hour window. In Luxor, day one covers Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple on the East Bank; day two covers the West Bank — Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon. In Aswan, day one covers Philae Temple, the High Dam, and the Unfinished Obelisk; day two is an early-morning excursion to Abu Simbel. Luxor and Aswan are about three hours apart by road or train. Nile Routes runs both blocks as private, guided itineraries with an Egyptologist, and can combine them into a four-day route or compress them into a faster two-day version on request.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you before you book Egypt: the country isn’t hard to see. It’s hard to pace.

You land with a list — Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Philae, Abu Simbel — and somewhere between the flight time and the heat and the fact that Egypt is roughly the size of France and Spain combined, that list quietly becomes a schedule that would break a marathon runner. We’ve watched it happen. We’ve also fixed it, hundreds of times.

So let’s be straight with you from the first paragraph. 2 days around Luxor & Aswan works beautifully — as two separate two-day blocks. Two days in Luxor. Two days in Aswan. Each one complete, each one sane, each one bookable on its own. Stack them and you have a four-day Egypt itinerary that covers more genuine history than most people see in a week. And if you only have 48 hours total, we’ll tell you exactly what that costs you in comfort, because we’d rather you book the right trip than the flattering one.

At Nile Routes, we’ve been building Luxor and Aswan itineraries for Western travelers long enough to know where the day breaks. We know which tomb is worth the extra ticket. We know what 6:00 AM in Aswan feels like in July versus January. That’s what this page is: our actual plan, written down.

Itinerary

We start at Karnak early, before the tour buses claim the Hypostyle Hall, because 134 columns deserve better than a crowd. Your Egyptologist will walk you through roughly 2,000 years of building work — every pharaoh who mattered added something here, which is why the complex sprawls the way it does. After a proper break, you'll visit Luxor Temple in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the avenue of sphinxes turns gold.

Travel Note: The two temples were once linked by a 2.7-kilometre processional avenue, now largely excavated. Ask your guide to point out where it begins — most visitors walk past it entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Luxor and Aswan in only two days?

You can see the highlights of one city properly in two days, or both cities in a compressed, fast-moving version. We recommend two days per city — four total — for a comfortable trip.

What is the best itinerary for Luxor and Aswan in two days?

Day one in Luxor for Karnak and Luxor Temple, day two for the West Bank. In Aswan, day one for Philae, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk, day two for Abu Simbel.

Is it better to start in Luxor or Aswan?

Luxor, in most cases. It has more sites, better flight connections, and finishing in Aswan sets you up nicely for Abu Simbel or an onward cruise.

How long does it take to travel from Luxor to Aswan?

Around three to three and a half hours by private car, and roughly three hours by train. A Nile cruise covers the same distance over three to four nights.

Should I travel between Luxor and Aswan by train, car, or Nile cruise?

Cruise if you have the days — it removes the transfer and adds Edfu and Kom Ombo. Private car if you want control and stops. Train if you're watching the budget.

Can I visit Abu Simbel during a two-day Luxor–Aswan trip?

Yes, but it consumes an entire day. It works if Abu Simbel is your second day in Aswan. It does not work alongside a Luxor–Aswan transfer.

What are the must-see attractions in Luxor?

Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon. That's the core, and it fills two days properly.

What are the must-see attractions in Aswan?

Philae Temple, the Aswan High Dam, and the Unfinished Obelisk, with Abu Simbel as the major excursion south.

Can I visit the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, and Philae in two days?

Only with a Luxor–Aswan transfer squeezed in, which makes for a long two days. Doable, but tiring — we'd suggest three days minimum for that combination.

Is a private tour better than a group tour?

For a short trip, yes. Private touring means no waiting, flexible timing, and a guide focused on your questions. On a two-day schedule, saved time is the whole game.

How much does a two-day Luxor and Aswan tour cost?

It depends on group size, hotel category, transport choice, and whether Abu Simbel goes by road or air. Send us your dates and party size and we'll quote precisely rather than guess.

Where should I stay overnight?

Luxor's East Bank near the Corniche is convenient for both banks. In Aswan, riverside hotels near the Corniche keep you close to the boat launches. We can include hotels in your package.

Is a two-day Nile cruise enough?

Standard cruises between Luxor and Aswan run three to four nights, so two nights is unusually short. If time is tight, drive between the cities and add a felucca or dinner sail instead.

What should I pack for Luxor and Aswan?

Sun protection, closed walking shoes, light long sleeves, a layer for early mornings, and small notes for tips. See our full packing list above.

What is the best season for visiting Luxor and Aswan?

October through April, with November to February the most comfortable. Summer is entirely workable with early starts and a proper midday break.

Can I take a two-day tour from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan?

Yes, using domestic flights — Cairo to Luxor, then Aswan back to Cairo. It's an intense two days with flight time built in, so we usually suggest three. Ask us about a Cairo to Luxor and Aswan package.

Are entrance fees included in organized tours?

In our packages, yes — all listed sites are covered. Special tombs like Tutankhamun and Seti I are ticketed separately and we'll flag the cost upfront.
