Egypt Family Tour Packages | Private Family Trips with Nile Routes

Here is the thing nobody tells you about taking children to Egypt: the country is not the difficult part. The pyramids do not need to be sold to a nine-year-old. Standing under 4,500-year-old stone tends to do its own marketing.

The difficult part is the schedule. It is the 5am start nobody warned you about, the four-hour drive that looked like ninety minutes on the map, and the museum visit that lands precisely when the youngest has run out of goodwill. Family trips to Egypt rarely fail because the sites disappoint. They fail because the day was designed for a coach, not for a family.

That is where we come in. We are Nile Routes, an Egyptian-based agency working out of Giza, and this page is our honest answer to the question we get every week: what do your Egypt family tour packages actually look like?

The short version is that we do not hand you a single boxed product labelled "family". We build your trip from the private tours we already operate — the ones listed further down this page, with real durations and real lead-in prices — and we shape the running order around your dates, your travel style and the ages around your table.

One thing to know up front

Every price on this page is a lead-in rate. What your family actually pays depends on your dates, how many of you are travelling and which itinerary you settle on. We would rather confirm a real number for you than publish a headline one and renegotiate it later.

What "Family-Friendly" Really Means in Egypt

The phrase gets used loosely. In practice, when families tell us a trip worked, they are almost always describing four things.

1. The day is yours, not a bus schedule's

Private travel is not a luxury flourish when you are travelling with children. It is the difference between leaving a site when your family is ready and leaving when forty strangers are ready. Our Sokhna Port excursions run privately, and our three-day Cairo tour and three-day Cairo and Alexandria package come with a private guide, which means the pace is a conversation rather than a timetable.

2. The big two get a full day, not a half one

The Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum sit close enough to work as a single day, and that pairing carries almost every itinerary we run. With children, that proximity matters more than it does for anyone else: less time in the car is more time on your feet, and more margin for the unplanned snack stop.

3. Somebody explains the story properly

A guide who can hold a child's attention is worth more than an extra site on the list. Our three-day Cairo tour is led by a private Egyptologist, which is why families who want the history explained rather than recited tend to land there.

4. You unpack as few times as possible

This is the quiet argument for putting a Nile cruise in the middle of a family trip. One set of rooms, several nights, and the view changes while you sleep. No morning suitcase parade.

The Building Blocks: Tours Families Combine

These are the programmes we actually operate. Think of them less as a menu and more as components — most family trips we plan are two or three of these stitched together, plus the transfers between them.

Our longest programme, and the closest thing we have to a complete family journey in one booking. Cairo, Alexandria, a Nile cruise and Luxor, taking in the Giza Pyramids, the GEM Museum and Khan El Khalili. If your family has the nights, this is the shape that uses them well.

How Family Trips Usually Fall Into Shape

Egypt family itineraries most often run somewhere between six and twelve days, with seven, nine, ten and twelve-day versions the ones travellers ask about most. Below is how those nights tend to distribute themselves. Treat this as a planning frame rather than a fixed product — the confirmed itinerary always comes from our team once we know your dates.

Trip lengthHow the days usually fallBest suited to
3 daysCairo only: Giza and the Sphinx, Saqqara, the GEM Museum, Coptic CairoFamilies with young children, or a stopover that still has to count
5–6 daysCairo core plus Alexandria, or Cairo plus a first push southShorter school holidays where nobody wants a rushed cruise
7 daysCairo, then south by short flight or overnight train onto the Nile cruise routeFirst-time families who want the pyramids and the temples both
9 daysCairo, Alexandria, Nile cruise and Luxor — the shape of our 9-Day Egypt TourFamilies who want the full arc without doubling back
10–12 daysThe nine-day arc with breathing room, plus a desert or coast extensionLonger holidays, teenagers, or anyone travelling a long way to get here

Cairo With Children: The Part Everyone Underestimates

Cairo does not reward improvisation. Giza sits roughly 30 to 45 minutes from downtown depending on traffic, and that range is doing a lot of quiet work in a family schedule. Plan as though it is 45.

What we know works:

  • The Pyramids and the GEM as one day. They belong together geographically, and splitting them across two days simply adds a car journey nobody needs.
  • Saqqara as the second pyramid. The Step Pyramid gives children a second data point, and a comparison is easier to remember than a single monument. It sits on our three-day Cairo tour.
  • Khan El Khalili in the evening. The city's oldest working bazaar is far better at the end of a day than jammed into the middle of one. It is loud, bright, and — crucially — nobody has to queue for anything.
  • Coptic Cairo as a half-day. Some of the world's oldest churches, and a calmer register after the plateau. It pairs neatly with a Khan El Khalili visit for families who have already done the headline sites.
  • The Citadel as the bridge. The Citadel of Saladin is the natural hinge between pharaonic Egypt and Islamic Cairo, and it gives you a view over the whole city — which children tend to like more than any interior.
Temple columns in Luxor, an easy walking site for families travelling with children

If you want to get the ticketing side straight before you arrive, our Giza Pyramids tickets guide and our pyramid booking page cover what applies at the plateau, and our Great Pyramid of Giza tour page explains what the interior visit actually involves before you decide whether to add it for your family.

Heading South: Luxor, Aswan and the Nile

Plenty of families stop at Cairo and go home happy. Plenty more discover, about two days in, that they want the temples too.

Cairo to Luxor tours extend the trip south by short flight or overnight train onto the Aswan to Luxor Nile cruise route, and a large share of the travellers who book a Cairo package with us end up doing exactly that.

For families specifically, the cruise earns its place for an unglamorous reason: it stops the packing. Your family unpacks once, sleeps in the same cabin for several nights, and the temples come to you rather than the other way round. Meals happen on board. Nobody has to find a restaurant with a tired six-year-old at 8pm.

Plan the extension early, not late

If you are weighing Cairo against a longer Egypt itinerary, tell us your total number of nights in your very first message. It is far more efficient for us to design the extension at the outset than to bolt it on once the Cairo days are locked. Flight timings and cruise sailing days shape everything else.

The Red Sea and the Desert: Where Families Add the Fun Days

An Egypt trip made entirely of temples is a lot to ask of a child. Most family itineraries want a release valve somewhere, and there are two obvious ones.

The Red Sea side

Hurghada is the usual answer for families wanting beach days after the ancient sites, and the two combine more easily than the map suggests — we run a Cairo day trip from Hurghada that works in reverse for families based on the coast who still want their pyramid day. If a beach stretch is part of your plan, say so when you enquire and we will build the sequencing around it.

The desert side

For families with older children who like sand more than stone, Cairo is also a base. We operate a Fayoum tour from Cairo and a private Fayoum desert safari, a two-day Western Desert tour, and Siwa Oasis programmes running three and four days as well. These are longer, rougher and more rewarding, and they are not for every age — our team will tell you honestly whether your family is the right fit rather than selling you the version that photographs best.

Practical Notes for Families Planning Egypt

On ages and pacing

We do not publish a minimum age, because the honest answer depends on the itinerary rather than the child. A three-day Cairo tour and a four-day desert programme are not remotely the same request. Tell us your children's ages in the enquiry and we will match the itinerary to them — and say so plainly if a particular programme is a stretch.

On running order

Cairo traffic and site opening arrangements mean the sequence within a day is sometimes adjusted. This is normal, and it is usually done in your family's favour. Our team will tell you what to expect for your specific dates rather than leaving you to discover it on the morning.

On what is and is not included

Inclusions such as meals, entrance fees and transfer arrangements vary between programmes. Please do not read across from one tour page to another — confirm them for the exact tour you are considering. We would genuinely rather answer the question twice than have your family arrive with the wrong expectation.

On paperwork and timing

Entry requirements depend on your nationality, and they can change, so check the current rules with the Egyptian authorities or your nearest Egyptian consulate before you travel. Egypt's cooler months are the more comfortable ones for long days at open-air sites with children, and if you are travelling in the hotter part of the year, tell us — we will front-load the outdoor sites and put the museums in the afternoon.

Egypt Family Tour Packages: Your Questions Answered

Inclusions differ from one programme to another, so we confirm them per tour rather than quoting a blanket list. What we can say: our three-day Cairo tour and three-day Cairo and Alexandria package include a private guide, and our Sokhna Port excursions are private with collection directly from the ship. Tell our team which tour you are looking at and we will send the exact inclusions for that programme and your dates.
Family itineraries commonly run between six and twelve days, with seven, nine, ten and twelve-day shapes the most requested. Three days covers Cairo without rushing. Nine days is where Cairo, Alexandria, a Nile cruise and Luxor fit together comfortably, which is exactly what our 9-Day Egypt Tour combines.
The one that matches your flight times and your children's tolerance for early starts. As a general shape: Cairo first for the Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then south onto the Aswan to Luxor cruise route, with Alexandria or a desert day added if you have spare nights. Send us your dates and we will propose the version that fits.
Cairo and Giza are non-negotiable for a first trip. Beyond that, Alexandria gives you the Mediterranean without an internal flight, Luxor and Aswan give you the temples and the cruise, and the Red Sea coast gives you the beach days that balance a heritage-heavy itinerary.
A cruise gives your family one set of rooms for several nights while the scenery changes around you, which removes the repeated packing and repacking that wears children out on land-based itineraries. Tell us your children's ages when you enquire and our team will talk you through the Aswan to Luxor route and how the days are structured.
For families, private formats are usually easier, because the day belongs to you. Our Sokhna Port excursions are private, and our three-day Cairo tour and three-day Cairo and Alexandria package include a private guide, which means the pace follows your family rather than a fixed coach timetable.
Yes. Our 9-Day Egypt Tour combines Cairo, Alexandria, a Nile cruise and Luxor in one programme, and shorter Cairo tours can be extended south by short flight or overnight train onto the Aswan to Luxor cruise route.
The Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum come first and pair naturally as one day. After that: Saqqara for a second, very different pyramid, the Citadel of Saladin for the city view, Coptic Cairo for some of the world's oldest churches, and Khan El Khalili as an evening rather than a midday stop.
Giza is roughly 30 to 45 minutes from downtown Cairo depending on traffic, and it features on nearly every one of our Cairo tours. With children, plan around the upper end of that range rather than the lower one.
Our three-day Cairo tour covers the Step Pyramid at Saqqara alongside the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx, the GEM Museum and Coptic Cairo, with a private Egyptologist guide. If pyramid architecture is the reason your family is coming, that is the itinerary that gives you more than one example of it.
Yes. We run a two-day Cairo and Alexandria tour and a three-day short package that adds the Catacombs, Qaitbay Citadel and the Alexandria Library. Neither requires an internal flight, which is one less moving part with children in tow.
Yes. We operate shore excursions from both Sokhna Port and Port Said, including a private twelve-hour trip from Sokhna and a one-day and an overnight option from Port Said. Sokhna guests are collected directly from the ship, with the Cairo Day Tour departing at 08:00.
Cairo works as a base for desert days: a Fayoum tour, a private Fayoum desert safari, a two-day Western Desert tour, and Siwa Oasis programmes running two, three and four days. Details sit on their own pages, and our team can tell you which combines cleanly with the Cairo itinerary you are considering — and which suits your children's ages.
Yes. Our Cairo day tours are built in flexible half-day and full-day combinations, which is what makes reshaping a family itinerary practical rather than theoretical. Tell us your dates, your priorities and your children's ages in the enquiry form and we will propose a structure.
The prices on our tour pages are lead-in rates — from $150 for a shore excursion and from $165 for a Giza day tour. The final figure depends on your dates, your group size and the itinerary you choose, so we confirm a real number for your family rather than publishing one headline price.
It varies by programme, so please confirm for the specific tour rather than assuming it carries across. As an example, lunch features in the day on our twelve-hour Sokhna excursion. Ask our team about the tour you are considering and we will set it out clearly before you book.
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and can change, so check the current rules with the Egyptian authorities or your nearest Egyptian consulate before you travel. We would rather point you to the official source than give you an answer that might be out of date by the time you fly.
Egypt's cooler months are the more comfortable ones for long days at open-air sites with children. If you are tied to a hotter travel window, tell us — we will front-load the outdoor sites into the morning and place the museums later in the day.
Comfortable closed shoes for the plateau, sun protection, hats, refillable water bottles and layers for cooler evenings and air-conditioned interiors. Modest cover-ups are appreciated at religious sites in Coptic and Islamic Cairo. If your itinerary includes a desert or coast section, ask us and we will flag anything specific.
Fill in the enquiry form with your dates, the number of travellers and the tour you are considering. Our team comes back with the confirmed details, current availability, the exact price for your group, and options for adjusting or extending the itinerary. There is no obligation at that stage — you are simply getting accurate information to decide with.
